徐曉白院士早期從事無機化學研究，攻克新型日光燈熒光料開發、稀土元素高溫二元化合物合成表征等多個關繫國計民生的重要科學難題。20世紀七十年代，徐曉白先生響應**號召，從無機化學研究轉向環境化學的研究，在有機污染物分析方法、環境行為和生態毒理學等多個研究方向上開展了大量開拓性工作，是我國環境化學學科的奠基者之一。
徐曉白科學論著選集編輯委員會編的《徐曉白科學論著選集(精)》選集介紹了徐曉白院士的成長歷程和主要的科學貢獻，選編了不同時期和不同研究方向的代表性論著。
