《文學術語與批評(第3版 英文版)/原版文學核心概念叢書》:
This is why we have stressed the idea that the poet is a 'maker',for this idea does help us concentrate on looking at the text.It alsoprovides us with a simple critical method for tackling even the mostcomplicated and ambitious poetry: even with major authors we canalways make use of, and rely on, the simple critical strategy outlinedabove of looking for a broad opposition between order and disorder.Even if the poet does have a philosophy, it is always going to be thecase that he or she will devote much of the poem's space to creatinga sense of life's problems before introducing his or her positiveresponse, before putting forward his or her own theories about whatmakes life bearable or how it should be ordered.Rather than try tounravel the poet's ideas, it is much more practical to approach eventhe most philosophically complex poem in a fairly naive way: lookingat how the poet uses language to create an impression of some ofthe woes of the world, and then looking at how he or she presentsthe idea of a more desirable order.
