Ethiopia is known as the "Water Tower of East Africa" and has a unique natural advantage and abundant crop resources， In the southern region of Ethiopia， during the rainy season， large areas of sugarcane seedlings on both sides of the river valley grow rapidly. But due to the underdeveloped industrialization， sugar cane cannot be converted into sugar， and the value of sugar cane cannot be maximized. As indispensable consumer goods for the Ethiopian people， sugar is a strategic material related to the national economy and the people's livelihood， and the sugar industry plays an important role in the national economy. Ethiopia's annual sugar demand is about 450，000 tons， but the country's total sugar production is 300，000 tons. There is a gap of about 150，000 tons per year， which requires the import of large quantities of sugar from abroad.
Since 2013， China National Complete Plant Import and Export Group Co.， Ltd. has been contracting the construction of three sugar factories： Kesem， OMO2 and OM03 Sugar Factory for the Ethiopian Sugar Company. The Kesem Sugar Factory was officially put into operation in October 2015 and passed the project test in June 2017. The whole factory was handed over to the owner for official operation. The construction of the Kesem Sugar factory has created the fastest record of the construction of Ethiopian sugar factory projects. It has been praised as "China Speed" by the owner and highly praised by Ethiopian national government departments， sugar companies， local government and tribes. The OMO2 and OM03 sugar factories， located in the Ohm Valley， are under construction. After the Kesem Sugar Factory was put into operation， the first phase of the project processed 1.2 million tons of sugar cane per year and produced 130，000 tons of sugar. In the second phase， the project processed 2 million tons of sugar cane per year and produced 210，000 tons of sugar. Both OMO2 and OM03 sugar factories can process 12，000 tons of sugar cane per day. After the OMO2 and OMO3 sugar factories are built and put into operation， the shortage of sugar in Ethiopia will be greatly alleviated.
During the construction of the sugar factory， Chinese enterprises adhered to the principles of localized corporation， common development， and joint construction and effectively drove the development of the local industrial chain and improved local economic development. The construction of Kesem Sugar Factory selected -local suppliers and construction companies to promote development of local enterprises. The Kense Sugar Factory Project is one of the best approaches for Ethiopia to build an agricultural foundation， improve industrialization， accelerate the commercial circulation and boost economic development. It promotes the development of local basic agriculture and industrial equipment. At the same time， it also activates regional commercial circulation， which not only solves the problem of insufficient electric power resources， but also produces high value-added products via by-products.
The construction of the sugar factory creates many jobs for local residents， enhances their work skills， increases their income， and improves the living environment and quality of life for local residents and tribes. After nearly 4 years of construction and operation， the surrounding environment of the Kesem Sugar Factory has undergone tremendous changes： from a small village of dozens of people to a small town of hundreds of residents， with complete social functions and supporting facilities.
