Topic introduction
人們見面時要相互問候,這是相互交往的禮貌原則,古今中外概莫能外。但在 問候的方式、方法和內容上,不同的國家和地區因為文化上的差異卻大不相同。中國人和外國人有著不同的文化傳統和風俗習慣,因此見面時相互打招呼的用語和習慣很多是不同的,甚至是大相徑庭的。如果一個不了解英美文化、不熟悉英美風俗習慣的人,以本民族的問候方式與英美人士打招呼,往往會使對方感到莫名其妙,或感到難堪,甚至會使對方產生誤解,從而使交際受阻。
問候的同時,還要稱呼對方,如何稱呼也是一大學問。一般的稱呼有先生、小姐、太太、教授、博士、總統、主席、閣下等等。稱呼不當,容易得罪人,也可能會帶來意想不到的後果。
因此,了解這些文化差異與稱呼的藝術,對於我們來說是很有意義的。

A: Fine. I haven’t seen you for ages.
B: I’ve been traveling a lot this past year.
A: That sounds exciting.
B: Not really. I miss the comforts of home.
Dialogue 3
A: Mr. Laurels?
B: Yes.
A: I’m Miss Green from Han’s company. How do you do?
B: How do you do?
A: I’ve got a car waiting outside to take you to
your hotel.
B: Thank you very much.
A: My pleasure. This way, please. Did you have a
pleasant trip, Mr. Laurels?
B: Yes, it was very nice.
A: Is this your first trip to the States?
B: Yes, it is.
A: Well. I hope you’ll enjoy your stay here.
B: I’m sure I will.
