本教材是結合各校目前的實際情況和教學計劃安排，為機械設計制造及其自動化、機械電子工程和農業機械化及其自動化等專業而編寫的。目的是在教師的指導下，通過一定的閱讀量，重點培養學生閱讀本專業書刊的能力。
敘述科技內容的語言和日常生活用語固然是同一種語言，但科技英語在其詞彙和語言風格上畢竟有其特點。科學技術本身的多學科性要求專業英語與專業內容相互一致。因此，專業英語(SubjectBased English,簡稱SBE)和科技英語(English for Special Science and Technology,簡稱EST)在語言特點上雖然是一致的，但是在專業內容上（主要表現在詞彙方面）其覆蓋面又有其特點。同一個單詞在不同的專業中往往有不同的含義。作為專業英語重點關心本專業的相關內容。目的是以英語為工具獲得本專業的信息。

本教材是在版使用的基礎上針對書中的錯誤進行修訂，同時對章節後面的習題重新編排，使習題在章節後出現的位置更加合理。相比版，增加了力學內容作為，以此往後類推。在計算機輔助設計與制造的章節中增加了計算機輔助設計軟件如SolidWorks分析方法的介紹。

The language of the statement content of science and technology are same language as daily life term language, but the English of science and technology has its characteristic after all on its vocabulary and language style As for science and technology, the subject requirement professional English and professional content are mutually consistent, and each subject has its own store of terms Therefore, SBE should be consistent with the substance of the corresponding subject And the English of science and technology (EST) is though consistent on language characteristic, is however on professional content (major expression in vocabulary aspect) it coverage also has its characteristic A same word often has different meaning in different special field Caring for the related content of own special field as professional English focal point, the main Purpose is to get the useful information of own special field by means of English
This teaching material divides into 5 parts totally, contains 17 Units The first part is fundamentals of mechanical engineering, includes mechanics,materials and its treatmenting and properties, mechanical drawing, engineering tolerancing, mechanism, machine parts, hot working and forming processes and so on The second part is equipment and technology of machine manufacture The third part is computerized manufacturing and mechatronics technologies, includes technology of numerical control, industrial robot, CAD/CAM, flexible manufacturing, group technology and so on The fourth part is the content in the aspect of assembly The fifth part is machinery for agriculture, concerned with the patrol engine, diesel engine, tractor and so on
This teaching material is selected from the publications of domestic and international publishers Its content has continuity step by step according to the process of undergraduate learning professional knowledge; English language goes from the easy to the difficult and complicated systematically Every unit revolves around a theme to compile text and practice problem In order to get more complete professional English knowledge, it should select the preceding chapter per unit as focal point to study because of limited class hours, others reading materials should be studied independently
