劉暉主編的《新編美國文學教程》將美國文學按
歷史發展的階段分成了四個部分：第一部分殖民地和
建國時期文學；第二部分浪漫主義時期文學；第三部
分現實主義時期文學；第四部分現代主義文學。本書
共八個章節，分別介紹了39位美國著名的文學家以及
他們的優秀作品，涉及各個不同歷史時期的文學流派
和主要作家及其代表作品。
本教程特色如下：(1)美國文學歷史時期背景知
識介紹全面。各個時期的文學作家及其選讀作品具有
代表性，作家和作品涉及面廣。(2)現代主義時期的
文學所占篇幅較大，涉及的作家和作品較多。(3)附
錄材料較豐富，有文學人物事件編年表和文學術語，
還有四套綜合練習題。(4)除了對作品原文加以注釋
外，還以問答的形式對作品的思想內涵、作家的意圖
、作品的結構和語言風格——進行了分析。編者既考
