本書旨在探索表層的聲學表征和底層抽像的語言學表征在聽覺詞彙加工歷程當中所扮演的角色。由於變調詞的表層表征和底層表征不一致的現像為心理語言學和音繫學理論帶來很多解釋上的困難,此書通過心理語言學及神經語言學手段,以普通話和閩南語的雙音節變調詞為實驗材料,來研究當母語者聽到底層和表層不一致的變調詞時的詞彙加工方式。總的看來,對於能產性高的變調規則來說,其變調詞之底層聲調在聽覺詞彙加工過程中扮演較重要的角色;對於能產力低的變調規則來說,其變調詞之表層聲調在聽覺詞彙加工中扮演較重要的角色。此書為變調詞的儲存方式和聽覺加工模式提供了心理和神經層面的證據,證明普通話和閩南方言的變調規則之本質會影響母語者大腦加工和辨識變調詞的方式。
