    精彩書摘

    《英語交際實用寫作(第2版 修訂版)/“十二五”普通高等教育本科國家級規劃教材》:

Here your sole concern is to perform an everyday communication task. Nothingelse- such as the quality of the paper you are using, the elegance of yourhandwriting, or niceties of your diction and syntax —— really matters in writing thisquick note.
Here are some guidelines for ellipsis:
1.Ellipsis is common in scribbled messages. As a rule of thumb, you may drop somenonessential items when jotting down something in a rush. However, there is nospelled-out rule that tells you when your language must be elliptical, how, and underwhat condition. In fact, you don't have to use ellipsis every time you write a rushnote. And in spite of the advantages of ellipsis, it is not necessarily always better. Touse ellipsis appropriately, you will have to find out not just how it is used linguisticallybut when and with whom it gives the maximum impact to your communication.
2.Use ellipsis when it is consistent with the tone of your message. You may considerusing ellipsis in messages intended to sound colloquial and homely. Indeed, ellipticallanguage resembles conversation and sets the easy and relaxing tone in your daily contactwith your friends and family. You don't want to sound differently in writing than youare in person. However, when your tone is apologetic in a more formal message, forexample, improper ellipsis may weaken your sincerity.
3.In cutting out language redundancy, make sure all missing parts are immediatelyrecoverable to your reader. Acceptable sentences with structural ellipsis must retainclearly recognizable structures holding sentence elements together, and the words takenout can be easily put back where they are in their original places. This enables yourreader to understand your message correctly. When the omitted words are notimmediately clear to your reader, your ellipsis obscures your message. Unless theambiguity is intentional, which is unusual in day-to-day communications, the omissionis misguided and defeats your purpose of cutting unnecessary words to save time bothfor yourself and your reader. As a rule, don't allow any chance for your reader towonder about the missing parts. You must ensure that your reader can correctly supplyall the words taken out from your sentences at the first glance.
