薩繆爾·貝克特(1906-1989)靠一部荒誕劇聲名鵲起,人們對他的印像也首先是一名劇作家。不過在二十來歲開始寫作時他選擇的體裁卻是小說。1969年貝克特獲諾貝爾文學獎,也是因為小說與戲劇創作上對文學界雙重的貢獻。他的大多數小說在《等待戈多》之前或同時期完成。從二十世紀三十年代一直到五十年代,貝克特專注於小說創作,他把特有的愛爾蘭背景、自己在求學過程中的學術積累、以及戰後零落的歐洲現狀融入自己的小說,並用越來越嫻熟的敘事筆調來展現。 本文集中探討貝克特五部小說中的時間觀念,首先分析了貝克特在《論普魯斯特》(Proust)中關於時間的思考,總結出他的兩個時間難題,即人無法抓住真正的時間,也無法用語言將真正的時間表達出來。接著論文緊扣貝克特小說的時間主題,集中探討他的五本小說,分別是《墨菲》( rphy,1935)、《瓦特》(Watt, 1945),《莫洛伊》(Molloy,1951)、《馬等
