本書以托妮·莫裡森的代表作——歷史三部曲《寵兒》、《爵士樂》、《天堂》為中心,聯繫莫裡森的其他作品,繫統地探討莫裡森重訪歷史、關注文化協商、指向混雜化,不懈地探索非裔美國人從個體的身份重建到群體和國族身份重建的文化身份建構,具有較高的學術價值和現實意義。

王烺烺:1969年生,安徽穎上人。1995年獲碩士學位後留母校廈門大學任教,2007年獲博士學位,2009—2010年訪學於美國杜大學。研究方向為美國文學和商務英語。近年在核心學術刊物上發表論文20餘篇,出版學術專著2部,編譯著4部,參與國家社科基金項目課題、教育部人文社科研究課題以及福建省社科規劃項目課題各1項。
一個原因是,雖然莫裡森的歷史三部曲都涉及身份建構主題,但每一部小說在探討身份建構中歷史、回憶和敘事的關繫時側重點不同。《寵兒》強調“重現回憶”對於挖掘歷史尤其是美國奴隸制“不可言說”和“未被言說”的歷史的重要意義。“重現回憶”乃構建完整自我的**步;《爵士樂》以爵士樂音樂為比喻,喻寫遭受地理和文化位移的美國黑人城市移民構建新的可行身份所必須進行的協商,這種協商涉及對於歷史的個體和群體性重建,它依賴歷史書寫的即興發揮和混雜化的話語策略;《天堂》則指出民族身份建構中必須警惕的陷阱。因為對於過去的回憶和故事的講述可能 縱,歷史書寫也可能與權力鬥爭以及基於種族、性別和宗教差別所進行的“他者化”密切相關。通過對於單一化歷史書寫及其采用的本質主義和論話語的批判,《天堂》成為國族身份建構發人深省的寓言。
