R.R.PALMER was born in Chicago in 1909.After graduating from the University of Chicago he re-ceived his PhD from Cornell University in 1934.From 1936 to 1963 he taught at Princeton University,taking leave during the Second World War to Work on historical projects in Washington,D.C.In 1963 he went to Washington University in St.Louis as dean of arts and sciences,but in 1969 he resumed his teaching theis time at Yale.After his retirement in 1977,he returned to Live in Princeton,where he was affiliated with the Institute for Advanced Study.Inrecent years he and his wife have resided in a retirement community in Newtown,Pennsylvania.His most important books include Catholics and Unbelievers in Eighteenth Century France; Twelve who Ruled:The Year of the Terror in the French Revolution ; and the tow-volume Age of the Democratic Revolution ,for the first volume of which he won the Bancroft Priae.He has also writ-ten,translated,and edited a number of other books.He was president of the American Historical Association in 1970 and has received honorary degrees from universities in the United States as well as abroad.He was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli International Prize for History in Rome in 1990.as abrad.He was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli International Prize for History in Rome in 1990.
